The word impact is increasingly used to describe certain activities or business models—but what does it really mean? Is it about economic success, or is it linked to something else?

If we understand impact as “the positive or negative material effects experienced by people and the planet as a result of a particular action or activity,” then every decision we make generates an impact—whether we are aware of it or not.

When we talk about “doing something with impact,” we’re referring to the act of driving meaningful change—whether at the individual, community, or global level—through our actions. The intention to create a positive impact on people and the planet goes beyond individual or economic goals; it’s tied to a desire to contribute to collective well-being and societal progress.

Everyone can create positive impact—if we set our minds to it. If we examine our daily lives, from the moment we wake up to the moment we go to bed, there are hundreds of small decisions we make that can lead to positive or negative outcomes.

  • What do we brush our teeth with? A plastic toothbrush that gets discarded, or a bamboo one that’s compostable and biodegradable?

  • What kinds of food do we consume? Do they care for the earth and for people? Do they promote local or sustainable development?

  • What means of transportation do we use? Fossil fuel-powered vehicles, or do we walk, bike, or use clean alternatives?

  • How do we invest our time? What’s the result of our working hours?

  • What do we wear? Where do the materials come from? Is it fast fashion, or does it follow the principles of slow, sustainable fashion?

  • How do we manage our waste? Are we responsible with our garbage, or do we neglect its impact?

The power to transform reality begins with the choices we make in our own square meter. From our roles as consumers, professionals, and members of society, we can contribute to a more just and sustainable world for both people and the planet.

Often, it’s the small, everyday actions that create lasting effects. We need everyone to take responsibility for their choices and to understand how important it is to choose with a focus on the well-being of people and the planet.
