There is a way to trade more sustainably, fairly, and equitably. During Fair Trade Month, three examples of businesses that generate a positive impact on the planet and people.

During Fair Trade Month, we want to highlight three businesses committed to sustainability and equity, which generate a positive impact on both the planet and people.

The traditional economic model, based on extractivism, disposable product design, and, in many cases, poor working conditions, has proven to have serious social and environmental consequences. In response, movements have emerged that promote a different way of doing business, based on justice, responsibility, and sustainability.

In Argentina, Latin America, and around the world, there are numerous examples of businesses that care for and regenerate the environment while promoting human well-being. Fair Trade is an alternative model to conventional trade, based on dialogue, transparency, and respect. This model promotes a fair relationship between producers and consumers, with ethical values that encompass social, environmental, and economic aspects.

We present three examples of Fair Trade certified organizations:

Hands of Uruguay

Certification: World Fair Trade Organization (WFTO) + People and Planet First

Location: Uruguay

Manos del Uruguay is a non-profit organization founded in 1968 to improve the quality of life of rural women in Uruguay. Using artisanal skills passed down from generation to generation and local materials such as wool, this organization provides employment to women in rural areas, giving them income, independence, and the opportunity for personal development while preserving their roots and traditions. Each garment or skein of wool from Manos del Uruguay bears the artisan's signature and the name of the cooperative, highlighting the personal bond behind each product. The organization works with 12 cooperatives in small villages across the country, and their profits are shared among them or reinvested in the organization. Since 2009, Manos del Uruguay has been a member of the WFTO, basing its approach on dialogue, transparency, and respect. They have collaborated with high-end international brands such as Polo Ralph Lauren, Marc Jacobs, and Stella McCartney. Their work not only produces beautiful and ethical products but also supports Uruguayan women and their communities.

La Riojana

Certification: Fairtrade International (CLAC-Fair Trade)

Location: Argentina

La Riojana Cooperative joined Fairtrade in 2006, becoming the first wine cooperative in Argentina to obtain this certification. They produce wines and olive oils, and more than 85% of their exported wines are Fairtrade certified. This cooperative has been a pioneer in promoting fair trade practices, which has allowed them to finance socioeconomic development projects in the communities where their beneficiaries reside. Each liter of Fairtrade-certified wine generates a premium or bonus that is allocated to these projects, enabling the development of initiatives such as the expansion of drinking water networks, the construction of schools, and the donation of medical equipment, among others. Thanks to this approach, La Riojana not only improves the living conditions of its employees and associates but also benefits the entire community.

Guayakí

Certification: Fair For Life

Location: Argentina

Guayakí Yerba Mate is a company founded in 1996 with the vision of sharing the culture of yerba mate and generating a positive impact on society and the environment. Founded by Alex Pryor and David Karr, Guayakí partnered with Indigenous and local communities to sustainably produce yerba mate. One of its first partnerships, in 2002, was with the Aché Kue Tuvy community, helping to conserve the Atlantic Forest and generating economic opportunities for Indigenous communities. In 2009, Guayakí became the first yerba mate company to obtain "Fair For Life" certification, highlighting its commitment to fair trade and producer well-being. It was also one of the first companies certified as a B Corp, reflecting its commitment to an inclusive and sustainable economy. Guayakí has expanded its reach through innovative programs such as "Ambacebador," which connects yerba mate enthusiasts around the world, and with products such as ready-to-drink beverages. Guayakí continues its mission to use business as a force for good, preserving the culture of yerba mate and generating a positive impact both locally and globally.
